SUPERMARKETS SWEEP THE INTERNET

You don’t have to be Dale Winton, or Reg Holdsworth, to realise that supermarkets now do a large portion of their business online.

The point was emphasised when Morrisons announced a rise in annual profit of £874million for the 12months ending in January, up from the £858million the company made one year ago. Even though the figures are impressive, it warned of a difficult year ahead as it bids to catch its rivals in the online sector.

Big Four

Currently, Morrisons is the only one of the big four supermarket chains – along with Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda – that does not boast a significant online business.

Its’ efforts to research e-commerce has seen it announce a £32million investment in US internet grocer FreshDirect, a company that is seen as the leader in offering fresh food online. In February it also acquired baby goods website Kiddicare for £70million.

Other leading supermarket chains have been quicker off the mark with regards to internet shopping. In addition to the grocery elements of their websites, including home deliveries; there is also Tesco Direct and Asda Direct offering deliveries of everything from CDs and clothing to DIY and car goods. Furthermore, both Tesco and Sainsbury’s offer their own diet related websites for nutritional eating.

Supermarket shopping online has a number of benefits – not only will it save you time, but you can usually arrange for home deliveries to suit your schedule and ensure that only the finest produce is selected.
